Top law school rankings are provided by a number of law school ranking organizations. U.S. News is one of the most popular ones. However, many law schools and professors take issue with ranking top law schools. This isn’t because law schools don’t want the accountability. It’s because law schools each have a different character, and what may be a top law school for one student may not be a top law school for another.
Law schools have strengths in various areas. For example, one law school may be strong in environmental law, while another law school is strong in business law. Or some law schools may be stronger in teaching lawyering skills and others may be stronger in teaching theory.
The lesson here is to find the law school that is best for you. While top law school rankings may provide a general guide, be sure to identify the characteristics you want in a law school before deciding your own top law school.
