1L Advice: What to Put in Your Backpack

Here is a list of some things to consider putting in your backpack as your prepare for law school:

  • A few black pens
  • A blue and red pen for when you need your writing to stand out
  • A few highlighters
  • A pad of paper
  • A few paperclips to keep related papers together
  • A different colored folder for each class to keep class handouts together
  • A 3-ring binder for your notes, unless you are taking notes on computer
  • A laptop computer
  • $10 for emergencies
  • Spare quarters to pay for a parking meter if necessary
  • A book holder (like mine or others) to hold up your large casebooks during long study sessions
  • Your orientation materials
  • Parking or bus information
  • Your school books for the first day of class and, if you plan to study after class, for the second day of class too
  • A couple of Tylenol in case you get sick
  • Benadryl (for sinus infections or allergies)
  • Cough drops
  • Gum
  • Mints
  • Floss
  • Maybe some caffeine tablets
  • Granola bars or other nonperishable snacks for “emergencies”
  • Ear phones (to listen to music on your laptop while reading)
  • A mini-Kleenex pack
  • Earplugs, in case your study area gets loud
  • Possibly hand lotion
  • For girls who don’t want to carry a purse all day, include items from your purse

Lunch Bag. You may also want to buy an insulated lunch bag and ice pack if you plan to bring your lunch or a snack to school.

Water Bottle. Also, consider buying a water bottle (possibly one that attaches to your backpack with a clip)

    Thank you so much for this list! I was homeschooled for the past 6 years and was out of school for another 2 before enrolling in college. I was so out of it I had no idea what to pack for the first day! Thanks a bunch!
